Car Insurance in Spain for Expats

Spanish car insurance arranged in English — for UK-plated and Spanish-registered vehicles, with your UK no-claims bonus accepted.

What Car Insurance is Required in Spain?

Third-party liability insurance (seguro obligatorio a terceros) is the legal minimum for any vehicle on Spanish roads. Driving without it is a criminal offence in Spain — not merely a traffic violation. Your vehicle can be seized on the spot.

Your Three Cover Options

  • Terceros (Third Party) — The legal minimum. Covers damage you cause to others — not your own vehicle. Suitable for older vehicles where comprehensive cover costs more than the car is worth.
  • Terceros Ampliado (Third Party Fire & Theft) — Third-party cover plus protection against fire and theft of your own vehicle. A reasonable mid-point for many drivers.
  • Todo Riesgo (Fully Comprehensive) — Covers damage to your own vehicle as well as third-party liability, including accidental damage, vandalism and collision regardless of fault. Often more affordable in Spain than you might expect.

Can I Use My UK No-Claims Bonus in Spain?

Yes — and you should. Your UK no-claims history has real value, and most Spanish insurers will recognise it. To transfer your no-claims discount you’ll need a letter from your most recent UK insurer confirming your no-claims history on headed paper, as recent as possible.

We handle this process as part of arranging your policy — we know which insurers accept UK no-claims history, what format they require the documentation in, and how to make sure you get the discount you’ve earned.

What Does Comprehensive Car Insurance Cover?

  • Third-party liability (mandatory legal minimum)
  • Damage to your own vehicle — accidental, collision, vandalism
  • Fire and theft
  • Roadside assistance and breakdown recovery (Spain and often Europe)
  • Legal defence costs
  • Personal accident cover for driver and passengers
  • Windscreen replacement
  • Medical expenses (on selected plans)
  • Replacement vehicle (on selected plans)

Vehicles We Can Insure

  • Family cars and SUVs — Standard comprehensive, TPFT and third-party options for all makes and models
  • Classic and vintage cars — Specialist policies with agreed value and limited mileage arrangements
  • Motorbikes and scooters — All engine sizes, from 50cc scooters to high-performance motorcycles
  • Motorhomes and campervans — Full-timer and leisure-use policies including European breakdown cover
  • Commercial vehicles — Vans, pick-ups and light commercial vehicles for autónomos and businesses

UK Licences and UK-Registered Vehicles in Spain

Your Driving Licence

A UK driving licence is valid for driving in Spain. However, once you become a Spanish resident, you are required to exchange your UK licence for a Spanish one within two years of establishing residency. The exchange is administrative — there is no test required.

Re-Registering Your UK Vehicle

If you bring a UK-registered car to Spain as a resident, you are required to re-register the vehicle on Spanish plates within 30 days. Driving a UK-plated car as a Spanish resident beyond this period can result in fines. When re-registering, you’ll need Spanish car insurance in place. We can arrange this for your vehicle before or during the re-registration process, using your UK no-claims history.

Car Insurance in Spain — Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive in Spain on my UK car insurance?

For short visits as a tourist, yes — most UK policies provide at least third-party cover in EU countries. However, once you are a Spanish resident, you need Spanish-issued car insurance. Driving as a resident on a UK policy is not compliant with Spanish law.

How long can I keep my UK-plated car in Spain?

As a visitor, up to 6 months per year. As a resident, you are required to re-register the vehicle within 30 days of establishing residency. There are associated costs (IVA, registration tax) — we can point you to the right contacts to handle this process.

Is it cheaper to insure my car in Spain than in the UK?

Very often, yes — particularly for fully comprehensive cover. Spain’s car insurance market is competitive and premiums are generally lower than equivalent UK cover, especially outside major cities.

What happens if I have an accident in Spain?

Contact us. We’ll guide you through the claims process, help you complete the European Accident Statement (Declaración Amistosa) correctly, and communicate with the insurer on your behalf. Having a local English-speaking broker makes the claims process significantly less stressful.

Do I need a Spanish NIE to insure my car?

Your NIE (or passport number, for non-residents) is required when arranging a Spanish car insurance policy. If you’re in the process of obtaining your NIE, contact us — we can advise on timing.

Can I add additional drivers to my policy?

Yes. You can add named drivers to your policy. Adding a driver with a good no-claims history can in some cases reduce your premium.
